Warm up sketching

It's been too long between sketch pads. I'm making a conscious effort to practice, practice and then practice some more!

So here is my lunchtime sketching, aptly named Fettuccine and meatballs!

Take 1

Take 2

Take 3

And next time I'll start with watercolour paper! You never know where your sketch will take you! :)

Ps this little cutie is 11-month old Cooper

In my sketch book ... Resume illo

I'm updating my resume to apply for a design job and want a signature illo included in the design, so I sketched this up tonight. It's ready for inking then converting to vector in the morning :)

Couldn't sleep ...

I was up at crazy o'clock feeding my 9 month old and then couldn't get back to sleep. So I grabbed my sketchbook and this little one came to life! Love a bit of early morning inspiration.

She's given me a great idea for this weeks Illustration Friday prompt, 'wish'.

To be continued ..... :)

Hand drawn with love!

I've found myself doing quite a few hand drawn logos for some lovely clients lately. It's such a thrill designing unique, illustrated brands! As an added bonus I'm seeing my illustration 'style' starting to take shape which is super exciting!

Here is a preliminary sketch for an up and coming logo. The next step is to ink it and then scan it in to Illustrator.

Sorry it's been a while ...

I'm back! In the last month and a bit I have been moving house and finishing up my Diploma in Graphic Design, which I will be officially finished this time tomorrow!

So until I am footloose and fancy free, I'll leave you with some illustrated typography I have been working on.

We have a new home!

Welcome to my new and improved blog! I have rebranded to compliment my soon-to-be launched website, and I have moved URLs. So please update your RSS feeds!

Things are a-changing!

You may have noticed that I am giving my blog a little facelift ...

This is to match the branding of my brand new, soon-to-be-published website. I am currently working on my personal branding, business planning and web and social media presence as I prepare to launch my freelancing services. Super exciting stuff!

It's also a step in the direction of my dream job as an illustrator. Sort of a 'build it and they will come' approach ... or 'build it and promote the be-jeezus out of it' approach!

I hope to have it finished tonight, and it will also include a URL change. Please bear with me as I make the changes and update my blog links across the web.

Illustration Friday - Beard

This weeks Illustration Friday topic is Beard - and this was the first thing that came to mind!

100 Days Project

I've just signed up to the 100 Days Project. This is where you choose one creative exercise, and then repeat it every day for 100 days. The aim is to see how your skill evolves over the 100 days.

My project is called 'Dynamic Doodles' and I will be drawing a page of small illustrations, or doodles, every day for 100 days. They will then be turned into vector clip art. Each day will have its own theme, such as 'wildflowers', 'houses', 'woodland creatures', etc in order to expand my range and skill as an illustrator. Some days might be just the doodles in pencil, other days might be finished vector artwork ... but every day will be inspired!

The challenge starts on 11 July 2014. If you want to view my progress, check out my page here: http://100daysproject.co.nz/project/2014/1379. I can't wait to get started! And I hope I can keep up.

If you want to sign up, go here: http://100daysproject.co.nz/

Happy doodling! x

Sneak Peek!

For the past few weeks I have been learning coding! Not the secret sleuthing sort of coding (although that would be fun!) but HTML and CSS coding to be exact. It is something I have always wanted to know how to do and with some prompting from my study I have almost finished creating my very first portfolio website.

So here is a little sneak peek of one of my favourite pages ...

Stay tuned because this is not far away from being launched!

Study study and more study!

I have been flat out with assignments lately - exciting design assignments but extremely time consuming! I am now working on three original illustrations for a book cover assignment. Here is a little sneak peek of one of my works in progress ...

Adventuring

I've decided to do the Fat Mum Slim Photo a Day creative prompt this month - and hopefully I'll finally finish this one! I've started it quite a few times over the last two years but never made it to the end.

Today's prompt is 'adventure', perfect for a little adventurer to come to life.

Miss L is home sick from school today and decided to create one too! This is her Flower Fairy Princess taking a stroll through her magical kingdom.

I just love getting creative with my little people! Here they are getting their craft on.

If you're interested in doing the FMS photo a day, here is a link to her website: http://fatmumslim.com.au. It's a lot of fun and you can see what everyone else is doing over on Instagram, just search #fmsphotoaday. Happy snapping! (With a camera that is!!)

May round up

I have been crazy busy trying to finish up my diploma of graphic design so I'm trying a new blog format to give a quick run down of where I'm at! So here I go ...

Finished: 'Indian Girl'
(and she might make an appearance on another new project I'm working on!)

Working on: Illustrating assignment based on the work of the amazing Mercedes deBallard

Listening (and grooving!) to: The Aston Shuffle

Illo crushing on: Mekel - a local WA girl doing some amazing fashion illustrating!

Next time I'll add 'drinking' as it will either be a delicious coffee or an invigorating green (or pink) smoothie!

Until then, it's back to the 2Bs for me .... :)

Bits and bobs

I found some sketches and bits and pieces from my old pin-up board today (two years on and I still have unpacked boxes!). That sketch in the middle is of my now 5-year old, from when she was about 18 months old. It's funny how seeing these pieces of past inspiration reinforces the creative journey I have been on for the past five years.

I am in the middle of making a massive new pin up board so I think these will definitely be up on display once again :)

(PS that photo of the little girl on the beach is me!)

Sketch to vector

Here is the sketch from my last post, now as a vector image (and styled as my Facebook cover image!). I'm not sure if this will be 'the one' for my website as I have another idea I'd like to explore, but I'm pretty happy with the way it's turned out! My first sketch to vector artwork :)

A work in progress

Just a little something I've just started working on - an original illo selfie!! This is in conjunction with learning HTML and CSS coding ... of course!

I am designing my own portfolio website and I'd love to add a little bit of illustration to my home page.

Feather with watercolour - take 1

I absolutely love illustration coloured with vibrant watercolour, but I am a complete novice at using it on my own illo's.

I used it here over the top of an artline pen sketch ... I like the effect but it wasn't quite what I was going for!

Feather with watercolour - take 1 :)

I'll try the same sketch with watercolour tomorrow and see what happens. Stay tuned ...

Is there anything better? :)

Here is #23/40

I hope you're having a happy, chocolate and family-filled Easter.

Illo assignment #3

I'm about 3/4 through my diploma in graphic design and currently studying the unit I was most looking forward to - illustration. I chose to study and draw like Abigail Halpin for my last assignment and now I am studying fashion illustrator Mercedes Bellard. The assignment is to do 7 direct copies, 7 mixed copies and 7 originals based on her style.

Up to the second copy and loving every, complicated moment!

Welcome to my corner of the web. A little spot to share, dream, brainstorm, collaborate and inspire.

Happy to see you here :)
